We had such a nice time with Jenya today. We tried to make it an extra special day for her birthday, but being only one, she may not have known the difference! First, we put her in her new birthday dress. We bought it here and the size was 12-18 months, but it barely fit her! It was a little tight around the torso and hardly covered her little behind. Oh well, at least she got one wear out of it. Kennedy, do you need a cute little green and pink dress?? It’s so funny to say that because we just assumed we would be using all of Kennedy’s hand-me-downs since we thought we would be adopting a 6 or 7 month old. Now we’ll probably be giving Jenya’s clothes to her!
After she ate her afternoon snack, we put a candle in the cake (but didn’t light it God forbid we started a fire in the baby house) and the caregivers gave her a large knife to cut it! Of course I helped her but was a little nervous because I’m not very good with knives myself (just ask April and Rick). With her tiara on her head she tasted her first birthday cake and frosting. We gave her the candle and she got frosting all over her hands and face. It was killing me not to wipe it off as fast as I could, but everyone was getting a kick out of her messy face. The cake itself was very tasty, but the frosting was super sweet. I’m sure that’s why Jenya loved it. One of Jenya’s caregivers named Tanya was so sweet and gave her a stuffed bear for her birthday. She made sure to have the translator tell me that it was for her to keep and take home to remember them by. I almost cried, they love her so much. We hope you enjoy the pictures of her first birthday, but wish you were all here with us to celebrate!
I have to add our food experience for today to the blog. We decided to walk to a nearby restaurant for dinner called Haupu. The manager at the hotel told us that it was authentic Kazakh food. We were excited to finally try it! We thought that since the sign outside included the English word “restaurant” that they may have an English menu. No such luck. And the waitress spoke no English at all. Luckily we have memorized the Russian words for Karaganda beer and ordered that right away. Then we just started pointing. Catherine and I tried to imitate a chicken with the arms flapping and everything and it seemed like she understood. Rick asked for beef and she pointed to a few options for each of us. The only other thing we’re good at ordering is French fries, which is “free.” Here’s what we got: Catherine had what she said definitely tasted like chicken and was stuffed with cheese and ham similar to cordon bleu. She loved it. Rick got a cheese covered steak that was definitely NOT beef, but was really good. We’re guessing it was probably horse meat as it didn’t taste like any other meat we’ve ever had. Rick loved it. I got what I thought was chicken wings and thighs cooked with lots of spices and onions. It tasted wonderful. As I started on my second piece (they were small) Rick pointed out the fact that it had a snout on it. Ha! I think I got pigs’ snout and feet or some other random pig parts. But, I loved it! We really lucked out with that adventure. We’re not sure if we’ll tempt fate again and pick a restaurant where we have no idea what we’re ordering, but we’ll see. We still have two more weeks to go!
Love the pictures! Happy Birthday Jenya!
ReplyDeleteJust love the middle picture, she is a princess already.
ReplyDeleteFrom the pictures, I did think she looked a lot bigger than 9-12 months. But than again the cut of the clothes may be different, that what we are use too.
That little amount to frosting on her lip does not come close to what I was expecting to see.:)
We have all been waiting for these pictures, and they are just wonderful. Thank you for shareing your special day with us.
And thank God the caregivers are so wonderful to Jenya. Lv U all
There was much more frosting all over her hands and face, but I couldn't post all the pictures. We'll show you them all when we see you!! Can't wait ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Jenya! What a special day for all of you:) I can't even begin to tell you the number of happy tears I have cried for you over the last 2 weeks!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday dear Jenya. I know that your day is nearly ended, only an hour or so left. The pictures show what a gorgeous baby Jenya is. I know she had a great birthday. I thank God that you were there to celebrate her first birthday with her!!! We are all so blessed to have Jenya in our family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful princess Jenya is. I am very proud of you for letting her stay messy. she looked like she was enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I was really frightened when I saw that giant knife in your hand. What restraint it must have taken Rick to take that picture while you held Jenya and that knife.
Did you ever try that 12month onsie I gave you on her. Was it too small. It will be very ironic if Kennedy gets Jenya's hand-me-downs when I saved all those bins of clothes for you.
Glad you enjoyed your meal. You are MUCH more adventurous with food than I could ever be.
Glad you had a great birthday Jenya!
I am so happy that your daughter got to spend her first birthday with her Mommy and Daddy! What a special day for all of you! I can't wait until we're all spending them together - we can have a big party for her and Robbie for their 2nd!
ReplyDeleteI'm really proud of you for continuing to eat after you found the snout! I would have been done for sure!
BTW- Artie is kicking butt on Food Network Star! :)
Love you!
hilarious! that knife if bigger than she is and you certainly look nervous! looks like it was a lot of fun! Happy birthday again to a beautiful girl!!
ReplyDeleteI meant IS bigger than she! Sorry, need to spell check!!
ReplyDeleteJust wondering, are you able to take pictures of the staff, or the outside of the orphanage, or the other babies?
ReplyDeleteLooks like Princess Jenya had a very Happy Birthday. I love the crown. Could the knife be any bigger?
ReplyDeleteLove you!
I'm not sure if anyone minds if we take photos, it doesn't seem like it. But I don't post them in case this blog is ever open to the public I don't want them to be available for just anyone to see. But when we get home we'll show you all the pics we've taken. Rick has been good about taking all the pics that Jenya might want to have as she gets older, which is nice.
ReplyDeleteGo Artie! I would love to try her cooking :)
A combined 2nd birthday party would be fun!!
April, I am going to try it on her today. Finally found long-sleeve onesies to buy here yesterday. They are hard to come by. I think it's actually going to be a little big, but I'll let you know. The caregivers would never let me keep her in just the short-sleeve onesie you gave me so I have to put something underneath! I still think she's in 9-12mo clothing because most everything she wears is that size. I think the dress was just a fluke.
Good morning Kristen and Rick. Have a great day with Jenya. Give her a big kiss for us. Love, mom, dad, and Kyle. PS. This is our last night in Maine.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure what the time difference is, but Happy Birthday beautiful girl! She is just the cutest!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE looking at these pictures over and over, and reading & rereading, all of their comments.
ReplyDeleteIt just shows the love, and support everyone has for you and Rick, and now for your little angel.
Our hearts are full. I can only imagin how full your hearts feel.
