We will be traveling to Qaraghandy (Karaganda)

It's Sunday, no visit today :(

If you’re wondering what we do on Sundays when we aren’t able to visit Jenya, the answer is shop, shop, shop! And eat! We do so much walking around the city we feel like we get enough exercise to stop and have a treat at one of the cafes. Today we got baklava, which was delicious.

The rest of the day was spent shopping for the babies and souvenirs. One of the pictures shows Rick and I in our new Kazakh slippers. Aren’t they cute? I couldn’t even believe Rick wanted a pair, but he loves them. I have to say, they are extremely comfortable. Catherine was able to find a pair for Tyler that are toddler size. We are still looking for some for Jenya. We are also having a hard time finding a traditional outfit for her baptism. The smallest they seem to sell is size 3. I wonder if we could find it online? I’ll have to check it out.

The other picture was taken at our favorite restaurant here in Karaganda. It’s a Chinese restaurant called the Princess. We’ve been there 3 times already in 2 weeks! The best is the fried cauliflower and the cashew chicken. One time Rick asked for some soy sauce and he got a fork. The communication isn’t always easy over here! But he was glad to get the fork because he was getting frustrated with the chopsticks.

Hopefully tomorrow we’ll have new pictures of Jenya to share. We miss her so much today. It makes me realize just how hard it will be to leave her for a whole month. I can’t even think about it!

  1. Rick you are funny. Every time there is a picture of you at a restaurant you have that same look on your face. I know you are thinking I need a good old American hamburger. I love the slippers. They look very soft and comfy.

  2. Happy to see an update on, this AM. I just came on to see the pictures once AGAIN.
I like the slippers, they look great. I think the food looks eatable. You are both so venturous, when it comes to food. I would TRY MOST anything, but I draw the line when it comes to a pigs snut. :)
It is a little warm here again today. 85 now, at 8:30A, heading to the high 90. with heat index 105.

  3. Those slippers are hysterical! I'm not at all surprised that Rick would want one. How is the shopping in the markets there? Do they have a lot of options? Did you get an entire wardrobe for Jenya yet?? I bet you are already having fun shopping for your baby girl.
Are you looking for a traditional Kazak baptismal outfit or just a traditional outfit?
I'll see if I can find anything online.

I have been thinking about you having to leave Jenya since you went over there to meet her. It breaks my heart for you and for her that you even have to do that. It is going to be one of the hardest things you have ever done. We will try our very best to keep you very busy while you guys are home.

  4. I love your slippers. When you come home you will be so busy, getting her room and the rest of the house ready for her to come home, the time will fly by. Before you know you'll be home and settled and the holidays will be here. So exciting can't wait.

  8. I too can't believe it is August already. We had dinner at Pancho's the other night. It was wonderful as usual. I had Tacos Carbon, ordered a side of guac and a mango-strawberry margiarita. Heaven. Of course the four of us went through 2 baskets of chips. I was thinking of you.
Kevin has his appt for his road test tomorrow, not sure I am ready for this. Hope you have a wonderful day with Jenya. P.S. Rick should make an entry on the blog, would love to read his prespective on things :)
